BROWNINGTON: The organizing committee of the Old Stone House Museum, in Brownington, Vermont has put together another exciting round of workshops and activities in celebration of the upcoming fall season. If you are interested in getting together to run, bike or walk the historic roads of Brownington as autumn colours begin to appear, learn about Shape-note Singing, basket weaving, learn more about planting and growing a variety of grains in our northern climate, learn to make fleece-lined mittens, learn how to make sauerkraut or learn about planting, growing, harvesting and storing garlic then the Old Stone House Museum is definitely the place to be in the next few weeks:-

Annual Fall Foliage Races - (Sunday, Sept. 8): Run, bike or walk the historic roads of Brownington. Course choices include: 12 mile bike, 1/2 marathon run, 5k run or 5k walk. Shape-note Singing: American Folk Hymns (Sept. 14 from 11 a.m.- 3p.m.): Ian & Chelsea Smiley from "Vermont Shape-note Singers" will offer an introduction to Shape-note singing and it's history, a presentation of the Shape-note method for learning to sight- sing music as well as some music theory & scales in major and minor keys. The class will sing songs together and share the traditional pot-luck "dinner". Learn about and help keep this unusual way of singing alive for others to enjoy. Basket Class: Make a Rectangle Garden Basket (Sept. 18 from 10 a.m.- 2p.m.): Carolyn Starr will teach this basket class at the Old Stone House Museum's Samuel Read Hall House. For those who missed the last Garden Basket Class, this will be the last Basket Class of the season. Cost is $25 or $20 for Museum members, plus a $25 material fee. Please register in advance. Small-scale Grain Growing in Vermont: Talk, Demonstration & Book Signing (Sept 21): Jack Lazor, of Butterworks Farm, will share his vast knowledge and experience on how to plant & grow a variety of grains in our northern climate. Whether you would like to grow enough wheat to provide a year's worth of bread flour for your family or grow your own grain to feed your horses or livestock, Jack can guide you and answer all your questions. Jack's new book, The Organic Grain Grower, "Small-scale, Holistic Grain Production for the Home and Market Producer" has just been published and Jack will be signing and offering his book for sale at the end of the talk. The talk begins at 10 am and the book signing will be held from 1-2 pm. Cost of the talk & demonstration is $25 or $20 for Museum members. The book signing is free. Please register in advance and bring your lunch.

Knitting Class: Fleece-stuffed Mittens (Sept, 21 & 28 – two Saturdays): Diana Foster, knitter extraordinaire, will be teaching knitters how to make a pair of fleece-stuffed mittens on two consecutive Saturdays. Choose from a wide range of gorgeous colors and make a pair of mittens lined with bits of washed and twisted fleece from Diana’s own sheep. Materials include: wool yarn, pattern and fleece. Needles will be provided for purchase or bring your own #6 or 2 gauge 40”circular needle. Cost is $25 or $20 for Museum members, plus a $10 material fee. Vegetable Fermentation: Making Sauerkraut (Sept. 22 – 1p.m. - 4 p.m.): Mel Hastings, experienced cook and health instructor, will teach students how to make a jar of sauerkraut. Through the production process, participants will learn the “science” behind fermentation, which causes cabbage to turn into sauerkraut, along with the abundant health benefits this “live” food provides. Students will bring home a jar of sauerkraut and complete instructions. Please bring a wide mouth quart jar with lid. Cost is $15 or $10 for Museum members, plus a $5 material fee.

Grow Great Garlic (Sept. 28 – 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.): Dave Sargent, experienced garlic grower, will discuss all aspects of growing garlic, including planting, harvesting and storage. He will demonstrate the process of planting garlic in one of the Museum’s gardens. Come and learn how to grow this essential staple to everyone’s larder and produce your own fresh garlic. Dave will have seed garlic available for purchase. Cost of the class is $15 or $10 for Museum members.
