By Nancy Nourse  Date: November 18, 2011  Region: Memphremagog

    Le Vieux Clocher de Magog

The history of this performance venue as we know it today, le Vieux Clocher de Magog, actually began in 1981, when Bernard Y. Caza purchased the site. He undertook to make the Vieux Clocher into an arts center which quickly gained notoriety, as much with the artists as with the public. The Vieux Clocher opened its doors on October 16, 1981, with guest artist Stephen Faulkner.

What was initially a Methodist Church, then a meeting place for Freemasons, this historical site now accommodating the Vieux Clocher de Magog has served numerous vocations since its construction in 1881. It was, however, during the 1970s that its cultural vocation became well-established. It became known as the home of the theatre company, les Baladins, bar performances and an arts center – taking on the name of the Vieux Clocher in 1975.

As years went by, le Vieux Clocher de Magog underwent many renovations which enabled the establishment to accommodate 400 people. Thanks to the intimacy which still reigns there and with its exceptional acoustics, the Vieux Clocher de Magog has become a popular establishment where, in a single room, artists can preview their performances/material before re-entering the bigger Montreal scene. Performing on this stage, you will find some of the most well-known artists in comedy and song. The artists’ walkway - a balcony area decorated with commemorative posters, attests to the first time these artists Le Vieux Clocher de Magogperformed at the Vieux Clocher de Magog.

Nominated twice at the Gala de l’ADISQ in the category “Diffuser de l’année (Broadcaster/Promoter of the Year)” and recipient of the Mélior prize, the Vieux Clocher de Magog is a legendary as well as an important venue today, where well-known artists of today … and tomorrow entertain their audiences.

  • REGIONAL PARK AT MONT HAM STILL ON TRACK

Author: Jacynthe Le Bourget Date: 2011-10-05 Region: Les Sources

Regional Park at Mont Ham still on trackIf all continues according to the original plan, the MRC des Sources should receive the results of two important studies within the framework of the Mont Ham regional park project, which will make it possible to finalize the installation and management provisional plan in October and to present the project of regional park to the population at a special public information meeting in November.

The results of the first study should allow a better knowledge of fauna in the forest sector of Ham, whereas those of the second deals with the economic repercussions and the maximization of the regional park project.

“The file is advancing well. We have three (3), parallel studies which will enable us to deposit the provisional plan for installation and management near the ministry for municipal Businesses, the Areas and the Occupation of the territory is that which will emit the authorization for the creation of the park”, explained Mr. Rachid El Idrissi, Director- general and Secretary-Treasurer for the MRC des Sources.

While waiting, the MRC des Sources continues moving forward, presenting the project to certain partners. This is how the members of the Board of Directors of the local Center for development (CLD) des Sources learned of the project. During the next few weeks, the la Corporation de développement communautaire des Sources, along with the CLD des Sources and other partners will also be able to express their comments on the project.

“The creation of a regional park is a process which could last several years”, reiterated El Idrissi, in particular because it requires the realization of relevant and essential studies to confirm the guidelines of the project, obtaining the authorizations necessary and the availability of investment funds. However, all is being done according to the original schedule”.

The implication of the MRC in the development of this recreo-tourist attraction of Mont Ham goes back much farther than yesterday. Indeed, the first Diagram of this installation of the MRC in 1985 established like priority the adjustment of infrastructures of reception to Mont Ham in order to make it available to the unit from the population from the MRC and the visitors. The declaration of intent of the MRC des Sources in the creation of the regional Park of the Mont Ham stated on November 28, 2007 falls under the continuity of the actions of the MRC, allowing the regional voice to be expressed for many years.

It is under the terms of the capacities which are conferred by article 112 of the Law on municipal competences (L.R.Q., C. C-47.1), that the MRC des Sources announced, by resolution, its intention to create a regional park around Mont Ham, the Forêt de Ham and Lac à la Truite (Trout Lake) so that this area is better protected and restored, while being more accessible for recreo-touristic activities. Various stages have been reached since that time, including the realization of preliminary studies such as the two public consultations in Ham-South (September 16, 2008 and March 3, 2009). These consultations were a chance for the population and the various speakers to express their views on the project. These opinions were taken into by the advisory committee and made it possible for the project to evolve.

    STANSTEAD VOLUNTEERS

Author: Nancy Nourse Date: 2009-04-15 Region: All regions

STANSTEAD VOLUNTEERSC.A.B. Rediker Volunteer Center, founded and incorporated in 1980, stands out among the many volunteer groups who have made a positive impact on the Stanstead community. In 1994, Reginald Rediker donated the former Catholic boys school in Beebe (now part of the Town of Stanstead) to the Volunteer Center. In honour of this generous donation, a motion was passed to change the name of the center to the R.H. Rediker Volunteer Center (1995).

The Center is administered by a Board of Directors made up of volunteers, professionals and representatives of community organizations. The mission of this dedicated group of people is to promote volunteer work in different areas, providing a response to the needs of the community.

Their contributions to the community include playing an active role in co-ordinating and developing a solid team of volunteer workers, supporting these volunteers, supplying support to local organizations and putting in place services that will be beneficial to everyone. Offering many different programs such as the annual Seniors' Health Day (a regional event), the meals on wheels program, accompanied transport, errand accompaniment, operating a thrift shop, a wide-range of programs for seniors, offering free blood pressure clinic, loan of orthopaedic equipment, income tax clinic, Christmas basket project in collaboration with the Border Customs Agency, the all-important food bank and referral services has earned this group of volunteers a warm spot in the hearts of many of the residents of Stanstead and surrounding area.

Project P.A.C.E., designed for mothers and children under 5 years of age, has acted as a life-saver for many the young Mom who was at the end of her ropes and didn't know which way to turn. This program not only offers valuable social contact with others but also workshops in preparing healthy meals and child-care - most importantly self-esteem. Meeting three days a week, the P.A.C.E. volunteers help bring peace and tranquility into the lives of these young moms...as much as there can be with little ones around who are trying to investigate each and every new thing around them. Not long ago, the original location of P.A.C.E. suffered damage due to a fire and had to relocate temporarily but rest assured the C.A.B. team found a way for this activity to continue.

Director Mylène Labonté and her team of '
cheerleaders' work hard to make the fearfulness, loneliness and isolation disappear from the lives of children, teens, adults and seniors. Sometimes just knowing that there is someone there to listen, someone who can also refer you to a person or specialist who can ease your mind is all that one needs.

Each year, C.A.B. Rediker celebrates National Volunteer Week by holding a special luncheon. This celebration is traditionally attended by government representatives (municipal, provincial and federal) who have come to realize that these celebrations are representative of the collective wealth of the Stanstead area. One politician was noted as saying that all too often this kind of wealth is not celebrated as much as it should be, especially when it pertains to seniors. According to research, 1.1 million people put in 180,000 hours volunteering in some way -- one-half the population of Quebec. Together we can accomplish miracles...one day at a time.
