COATICOOK: The Beaulne Museum of Coaticook is pleased to present “Celebrating the Newborn - Christening garments” (until November 24, 2013). The public is cordially invited to discover this new exhibition.

The ritual of the Catholic baptism is the first of the three sacraments which represent the initiation into Christianity, followed by the first Communion (Eucharist) and then Confirmation. This particular type of celebration is similar for all baptisms whether they involve infants, children or adults. The parents of very young children speak on their behalf.

At the heart of this celebration is the Christening garment which is deemed the most important symbolically. During the Victorian era, baptism gowns were very elaborate. Over time, many changes were made regarding materials and embellishments. Apart from the gown, the ensemble of garments was and is fabricated with great care and expertise. The rite of Baptism is also characterized by a number of codes, signs, objects offered as gifts, etc.

This exhibition highlights this practice and displays several Baptism gowns filled with historical anecdotes as well as accessories which definitely make the act of Baptism a veritable institution. This exhibit was prepared with items from the Museum's own collection.
