CSS PRESENTS HANDEL'S MESSIAH Journalist: Myriam Sainson

On December 18, in the église Sainte-Famille, (610 rue Papineau, Sherbrooke), Sherbrooke Symphony Choir (CSS), offers an Advent concert, under the direction of Robert Ingar, accompanied by a orchestra with 15 musicians and four soloists who will perform extracts from the oratorio Messiah by Georg Friedrich Handel, followed by pieces by Vivaldi and other songs of the holiday season. This is, indeed, a concert invitation that you will definitely want attend!
The Sherbrooke Symphony Choir already has a great reputation for its concerts of classical music and lyrics: because of these exemplary interpretations, the orchestra which is generally composed of ''a hundred mixed voices of all ages''. Their mission is to share the choral song and lyric art to its members and all the population of the greater region of Sherbrooke''. Its workshops and teachings to young people and to everybody who is interested in becoming a chorister are fundamental to assure an exceptional future and the continuation of its activities. As a member of the Alliance Choir of Quebec and the Estrie Cultural Council, the Sherbrooke Symphonic Choir enjoys several benefits, because of its multiple talents, of generous grants from the City of Sherbrooke and from its mayoral partners the City of Sherbrooke and the Caisse Populaire Desjardins.
The choice of the CSS to play the Messiah of Georg Friedrich Haendel is very symbolic of the nature itself of the composition which was written, in 1741, by Charles Jennens and further composed by Haendel for the religious fest of Easter. It became popular and mostly played during the Advent period. It has inside itself that the indelible mark of the '' resurrection of the Messiah'' and the one of '' redemption''. This composition was also written for orchestra and choirs with the participation of 5 soloists like a soprano, a mezzo-soprano, a contre-tenor, a tenor and a bassist.
