Centennial Theatre Launches 2013-2014 Program

CentennialLENNOXVILLE: Centennial Theatre, at Bishop’s University is ready to launch its 2013-2014 season, COLOUR YOUR WORLD, with a special promotion for all those who subscribe before June 28: 15% reduced rate on price of tickets, a bonus show, choice of the best seats, priority of purchasing tickets for the Jesse Cook concert before they go on sale to the general public, a preferred rate when purchasing other tickets throughout the season (with the exception of Jesse Cook on November 28) and free ticket exchanges.

For the general public, subscriptions become available as of August 1 (819-822-9692) and individual tickets as of August 19. Jet 7 Cards can also be purchased at La Maison du Cinema. Gift certificates are also available at the Box Office (819-822-9692). If you choose the “AT LARGE” package, you will be able to select your own unique series of performances throughout the entire program – back by popular demand! This new season includes five series of interest including dance, music, jazz, world music and «off series» as well as a new space for our Centennial Lounge Sessions – guest artists will be able to offer their music in the intimate and luminous setting of the lobby.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the Dance Series, in collaboration with the Centre culturel de l’Université de Sherbrooke, offers a selection of eleven creations from which dance lovers can choose five shows to create their personal subscription. Centennial Theatre will be presenting an array of returning guests including Montréal Danse in Prismes by choreographer Benoît Lachambre, Fortier Danse-Création presenting Vertiges by and featuring Paul-André Fortier; Cas public delves into Bach’s Goldberg Variations through the interpretations of Canadian pianist Glenn Gould - The Tempest Replica based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest , choreographed by Crystal Pite, marking the return of Vancouver’s Kidd Pivot to Centennial.

New faces of dance emerge during the season : Out Innerspace Dance Theatre - a revelation on the Canadian dance scene, presenting Me So You So Me; Complexe des genres by Quebec’s rising star choreographer Virginie Brunelle; Anne Plamondon, co-founder of RUBBERBANDance Group bringing her first solo project - Les mêmes yeux que toi exploring the universe of mental illness; and finally, Catherine Gaudet bring the anniversary season to a close with her duet Je suis un autre – a strong new dance signature.

The Centre culturel de l’Université de Sherbrooke will present Harry and Night Box by BJM; Fluide featuring the work of Quebec City choreographer Harold Rhéaume for Le fils d’Adrien danse; and New York-based dance company Abraham.in.motion in the contemporary hip-hop production Pavement.

MUSIC: A mostly afternoon series of concerts enabling audiences to discover flourishing and seasoned artists. Composers Bach and Telemann are the subject of the first concert of the season with Arion Orchestre Baroque; soprano Simone Osborne paying a brilliant homage to the late Maureen Forester; Quatuor Molinari performing three major works of contemporary music. Russian pianist, Pavel Kolesnikov will perform the only evening concert in this series; Ang Li, Chinese-born Canadian pianist, with a repertoire that spans centuries.

JAZZ SERIES: Jazz Saxophonist Rémi Bolduc and ensemble launch this series with music from their latest CD Random Masters percussionist; Marie-Josée Simard joins forces with jazz pianists Yves Léveillé and François Bourassa in a concert entitled En trois couleur; Jérôme Beaulieu’s trio French « chanson » hold a place of honour with Trio Yannick Rieu with their tribute La vie en rose and Shai Maestro now leads his own trio including drummer Ziv Ravitz and bassist Jorge Roeder.

WORLD MUSIC Peruvian singer and composer Patricia Cano sets the tone for this cultural journey; Roberto López and his Afro-Columbian Jazz Orchestra offer a unique encounter between the wind ensembles of Colombia’s Caribbean coast and North-American Big Jazz Bands; Urs Karpatz and their gypsy songs; Mali Fatoumata Diawara and a celebration of spring with a typical Louisiana party with Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys.

OFF-SERIES: Centennial Theatre patrons become master of their subscriptions by selecting 5 shows among 10 suggestions. Award-winning sextet, Montreal’s Sagapool charms audiences with their Centennial Theatre logoinstrumental mix of klezmer and manouche music; Jill Barber returns to Centennial for a third performance this time featuring music for her latest album Chansons, an evening « en français »; David Myles headlining a new tour with In the Nighttime; Whitehorse combining the stunning guitar skills of Luke Doucet and Melissa McLellan’s moving vocals; Montreal singer and pianist Elizabeth Shepherd. Martha Wainwright gives her first performance at Centennial; guitarist and composer Ben Charest and the Belleville Orchestra celebrate the 10th anniversary of the musical and movie success of Triplettes de Belleville; Emilie-Claire Barlow shares her latest CD, Seule ce soir; Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Slean brings music from her latest album, Land & Sea; this colourful season comes to an end with Similia - a duet featuring twins Nadia (flute) and Annie (guitar) Labrie in a tribute to world music and a special homage to the late Ravi Shankar.

CENTENNIAL LOUNGE SESSIONS: a new series of concerts in the Centennial Theatre Lobby! Three bands have been invited to perform in this bright space with a view onto nature, to present their music, and to introduce themselves to Centennial audiences and students on campus: LoFi Octet represents an audacious encounter between a classical string quartet and contemporary jazz; Montreal Hard Bop Five whose passion, soul, and talent combine for a memorable and groovy evening; Sherbrooke quartet Auguste offers francophone adult pop with orchestral flair and a touch of folk. The lobby will also become the venue for the Maison des arts de la parole and their story-telling festival – Les jours sont contés en Estrie (Tales recounted throughout the Eastern Townships). Yukon author and story-teller Ivan Coyote brings award-winning stories up close and personal.

SHERBROOKE PARTNERS

For the past few years, Centennial Theatre has been collaborating with local cultural organizations in order to provide a professional setting for their events as well as to introduce citizens to our wonderful performance space. The Ensemble à vents de Sherbrooke will be presenting 2 concerts in celebration of their 30th anniversary; the Orchestre symphonique des jeunes de Sherbrooke offers a series of three performance featuring up-and-coming musicians; a new association with Théâtre des petites lanterns brings La Grande Centennial seatingcueillette des mots de l’Estrie - a professional work which stems from the words of 400 young people from the Eastern Townships.

DANCE RESIDENCE: Centennial Theatre, recognized as an important center for dance in the region, regularly welcomes dance companies looking to put the final touches on their creations before presenting them to the general public. This season Centennial Theatre welcomes choreographer Katie Ward and her project Night and Dreams as she collaborates with composer Mike Feuerstack and artistic consultant Kathy Casey. Sherbrooke resident Catherine Archambault further explores with her work ¼ (première) where four women at various ages share the stage and create a dance that is part story and part glimpse into each one’s future.
