Beginning Saturday, October 15, the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke presents works by a great Canadian Photographer, Gabor Szilasi. The vernissage will take place on Saturday, October 15; from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mr. Szilasi will join us for the event. The exhibition was developed by guest curator David Harris, associate professor at the School of Image of Ryerson University in Toronto and organized by the Musée d’art de Joliette and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. The Eloquence of the Everyday will continue until Sunday, January 8, 2012.  

Over the course of the last 50 years, Gabor Szilasi (b. Budapest, 1928) has created one of Canada’s significant and influential collections of photographic work, comprised of environmental portraits, domestic, commercial, and urban views of Montreal and Budapest, and images of rural Quebec. His photographs are found in numerous private and public collections in both Canada and Europe. The Eloquence of the Everyday uncovers the essence of Gabor Szilasi’s artistic vision through his observations of urban and rural life and his recordings of the connections between culture and community.  

Impressionism: Structured around three themes – Hungary, rural Quebec and Montreal – the exhibition brings together 124 photographs culled from diverse private and public collections. These emblematic images – some of which have never before been shown – include urban landscapes, architectural views and environmental portraits testifying to Szilasi’s indefatigable faith in the innately humanistic and documentary qualities of photography.

Thanks to a European point of view Szilasi has highlighted the specificities of the communities he photographed, creating touching documents that act as witness to the singular character of Hungarian and Quebecois societies of the latter half of the 20th century.

Gabor Szilasi has influenced generations of photographers not only through his work, which has been exhibited throughout Canada and abroad, but also through his teaching, notably in the photography department of Concordia University. Now retired from teaching, Gabor Szilasi continues to live and work as a photographer in Montreal.

Le Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke (241 Dufferin, Sherbrooke) is funded by le ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine and by Ville de Sherbrooke. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from noon until 5 p.m. -- $7.50 / adults; $6 / seniors; $5 / students. Guided tours in English or group tours are available anytime but reservations are a must.
